Stanley Menzo admits Ajax Cape Town were out-foxed by Cape Town City

Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo was not totally distraught by his side’s derby loss, yet admits Cape Town City out-foxed his side’s tactics in their 2-0 defeat.

The Citizens claimed all three points, and the Cape derby double, thanks to a goal from Aubrey Ngoma and an Erwin Isaacs own goal, leaving them temporarily top of the Absa Premiership standings.

Losing coach Menzo admitted after the game that City were tactically superior and deserving of their victory.

“Our performance wasn’t too bad,” he told reporters. “But in football, it’s about the details and small things which make a big difference. We were at home and had to make the play, because we wanted to win, but City play good transition football; they have a good team, are very mature and wait for the right moments.”

Menzo feels his side’s possession football was ineffective against a City side who utilised their strengths to their advantage.

“Each team has its own qualities – one team has the quality of keeping the ball, and that’s probably us,” he said. “But keeping the ball for a long time won’t make you win games. Out of possession you have to create chances and score goals.

“City decided to have less of the ball, but were very efficient as they have the players for that – mature players, players who can run and see things, and make good decisions: Manyama sees the moment his side wins the ball, and is already on his way. And that’s quality … and not what we have, we have other qualities. And it’s not easy to play against a team like that.”

Ajax, now 11th in the standings, will look to bounce back against Polokwane City in their next fixture on Saturday.
