Multi-million rand payday to help cushion blow of Mamelodi Sundowns' packed fixture list

Posted: 10 February 2017 Time: 17:22

Mamelodi Sundowns will have their eyes firmly on their multi-million rand payday this month as they prepare for a taxing fixture schedule which sees them play seven games in the space of 21 days.

The highlight of February for the Brazilians will come when they face TP Mazembe in the CAF Super Cup, a once-off tie from which the winners will pocket R13,4 million while the losers are guaranteed R10,05 million.

Having returned to action on Wednesday with an away victory at Bloemfontein Celtic, Sundowns’ next assignment is a home game against Orlando Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versveld [15h30 kick-off].

After that, they have a Valentine’s Day date with Chippa United at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdatsane, East London - a midweek fixture that goes ahead after the Brazilians’ request for a postponement was turned down by the PSL.

Sundowns argued that they needed a full week of preparations for their Super Cup first-leg clash against 2016 CAF Confederations Cup winners TP Mazembe.

After that CAF match, they will have three further league matches to play, on February 21 versus Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng Stadium, February 25 versus BidVest Wits at Loftus, and another meeting with Chippa on February 28, which will this time be played at Loftus.

The Brazilians are currently six points behind joint leaders SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits but have five and four games in hand over the two clubs respectively.

Having played just nine league games during the first-half of the season, they will now have 21 to play before June 17 when the PSL season comes to its conclusion.

Further progress in the CAF Champions League and the Nedbank Cup will also stretch their games for this second-half alone to over 30.

They start off their CAF Champions League title defence against the winner of the preliminary round contest between Kampala Capital City Authority (Uganda) and Angolan club Primeiro do Augusto.
