Another health scare for Ajax Cape Town striker Prince Nxumalo

Posted: 9 February 2017 Time: 14:59

Ajax Cape Town are once again sweating over the fitness of striker Prince Nxumalo following another health scare.

The 26-year-old, who top scored for Ajax with 13 goals last season, suffered yet another epileptic fit on the eve of his side’s first league game of 2017 which ended in a 5-0 humbling at the hands of Bidvest Wits on Tuesday night.

This brings the number of reported epileptic fits suffered by the forward to four since the first attack, also while Ajax were away at Wits, in August 2015.

Head coach Stanley Menzo insists it is not too serious, yet did not include the star frontman in the squad against the Clever Boys as a precautionary measure.

“Prince had another epileptic attack the evening before the game, so we didn’t take a chance to bring him in for the Wits game,” Menzo told reporters. “It’s not serious, but we don’t take chances with those things – you don’t know what can happen in football. I hope and think we will solve this problem.”

Menzo says the Ajax medical team will assess the player on his return from Johannesburg later today, and is unsure whether Nxumalo will be fit for the derby with Cape Town City on Saturday evening.

“He’s flying back later on Thursday, and we’ll see how he is, and if he can train, and only then will we be able to decide if he will be in the squad,” he said. “But again, I don’t like taking risks with somebody’s health. I’d rather let him rest for one or two days more than bring him in.”
