Augusto Palacios says Orlando Pirates still in title race following draw with Platinum Stars

Orlando Pirates caretaker coach Augusto Palacios believes the team can still win the league this season.

Pirates, who drew 0-0 at Platinum Stars on their return to action last night, are 10th on the table with 19 points from 14 fixtures - nine points adrift of leaders SuperSport United but with a match in hand.

And while Bucs are on a six-game winless run in all competitions, having lost their previous two contests before the mid-season break, Palacios remains optimistic.

"You know, let me tell you something in football," says Palacios. "You cannot predict but you can think mathematically. Nineteen points and 28 points, you are talking about nine points. You think about one game in hand.

"You may never never know, sometimes you win two games in succession and you are in a different position. Let's hope. We need to continue to work hard. You say nine points is too far but you need to continue to fight," adds Palacios, who slammed the officiating after the stalemate in Rustenburg.

The Buccaneers next visit champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versveld Stadium on Saturday (15h30 kick-off).

Downs, 1-0 victors at Bloemfontein Celtic yesterday, are fifth in the standings with 22 points from 10 outings.
