Michael Boxall keen on SuperSport United stay

Posted: 9 February 2017 Time: 10:26

SuperSport United defender Michael Boxall has revealed to KickOff.com that negotiations on a contract extension are currently underway with the club’s management.

Boxall joined Matsatsantsa, along with countryman Jeremy Brockie, just over 18 months ago from New Zealand-based A-League outfit Wellington Phoenix, and will see his initial deal come to an end at the end of the 2016/17 season.

The All Whites fullback, though, has been enjoying life in South Africa and says he would love to continue playing in the Premier Soccer League with the Tshwane-based outfit, should they reach an agreement.

“I have been speaking to the club about extending, so we’ll see how that goes,” he tells this website.

“I’m really enjoying it here. This season has gone really well, ever since [Stuart] Baxter’s taken over, I’m absolutely enjoying my football and results are coming our way, so I’m very happy here.”

Following their 5-2 thrashing of Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening, SuperSport have held onto top spot – due to a superior goal difference over Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City – despite having the second highest number of draws (7) this season.

The stocky 28-year-old, who has managed two goals in 14 league appearances so far this season, believes his team can still improve a lot, as he reveals their key focus during the recent recess was their return in the final third.

“I think where we are sitting now, we’re not too satisfied with it because I think we could be so much better off than where we are [in terms of number of points],” he adds.

“I think defensively we’ve been very solid but we just struggled in the final third [in the first half of the season], so in the recent break we worked on that a lot.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to also turn a few of the 0-0 draws into 1-0 and 2-0 wins, and keep pushing to stay where we are on the log table.”
