SuperSport United moved back to the top of the Absa Premiership table with a 5-2 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.
SuperSport handed a debut to winger Mandla Masango, who arrived on loan from Danish side Randers last month, but he was replaced at halftime by Thuso Phala.
Golden Arrows gave first starts to Malawian Chiukepo Msowoya and Zimbabwean forward Knox Mutizwa.
Goals from Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Phala, Cole Alexander and Morgan Gould, as well as an own goal on debut for Arrows’ Malawian striker Chiukepo Msowoya, saw Stuart Baxter’s side claim the three points.
Arrows’ goals came via Kuda Mahachi and Lerato Lamola, but coach Clinton Larsen will be disappointed with the way they defended.
After a goalless first half in which the best chance fell to Arrows’ Zimbabwean forward Knox Mutizwa, who missed a one-on-one chance against Reyaad Pieterse, the floodgates opened in the second period.
SuperSport were 2-0 up within three minutes of the restart as Letsholonyane and Phala scored twice in 60 seconds.
Arrows pulled one back through Mahachi, but the two-goal advantage was restored when Msowoya put the ball into his own net.
SuperSport extended their lead when Alexander, who also scored in the final game of 2016, found the back of the net.
Arrows continued to fight though and Lamola narrowed the gap once more with a second for the KwaZulu-Natal side.
But the final word fell to Gould, who added a fifth for a rampant SuperSport.
