Orlando Pirates were held to a 0-0 draw by Platinum Stars in their first Absa Premiership clash of 2017 at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Wednesday.
Pirates give a debut to forward Thembinkosi Lorch, who arrived back from a loan spell at Chippa United last month.
Tendai Ndoro had a half-chance early on but a poor first touch allowed the Stars defence to clear.
After that, the best chances in the first half all fell to the home side.
Bongani Ntuli brushed aside Pirates defender Happy Jele to race through on goal, but keeper Brighton Mhlongo saved his effort with his body.
Stars skipper Vuyo Mere found himself in at advanced role in the box but with a clear sight of goal, flashed his shot over the bar.
Pirates lost Issa Sarr to injury on 34 minutes, with Abbubaker Mobara replacing him.
Ndumiso Mabena managed to get his bicycle-kick effort on target, but it was straight at Mhlongo.
The latter was forced off early in the second half when Stars’ Gerald Phiri Jnr accidentally fell on his ankle in the box, to be replaced by Jackson Mabokgwane.
Pirates should have been ahead with a little over 20 minutes remaining when Thabo Matlaba burst into the box, but with Ndoro begging for the ball for an easy tap-in, went for goal and struck the side-netting.
