Tefu Mashamaite confident of SuperSport United's title chances

Posted: 8 February 2017 Time: 09:57

SuperSport United defender Tefu Mashamaite firmly believes that his new club have a good chance of going all the way in the Absa Premiership title race.

Mashamaite has finally returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, after suffering a knee injury upon his return from Swedish side BK Hacken in August last year.

A former league-winning captain himself, the 32-year-old is confident of his team's chances of sustaining their title challenge until the end, while downplaying the current log standings.

"You have to be confident, it doesn't have to come from the experience or the quality of the coach," said Mashamaite.

"As long as you believe [that you can win the title] yourself, and you maximise that belief, then you stand a good chance. It's just about our self belief.

"The coach has been reminding us that right now, as things stand, the log positioning is just cosmetic and only about feeling good about ourselves, but it doesn't say much about deciding the league title.

"We have to keep our heads down and just keep working, and do the same things that we did in the first round. I think if we maximise that then we stand a good chance of winning the league."

With the addition of Mandla Masango, the ex-Kaizer Chiefs skipper admits it brings a familiar feel to his old surroundings, but believes it aids coach Stuart Baxter in trying to entrench his philosophy into the rest of the squad.

"Familiar faces that I also used to compete against, you know, the likes of Thusa [Phala] also," says the veteran defender. "It helps because sometimes you admire them from a distance.

"But it also helps that you have people that you've worked with, starting from the coach to the players, because you know what the coach expects and you are able to assist him in transfering his philospohy into the players that he's just come into contact with."

SuperSport will face Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium tonight, with kick-off set for 19h30.
