Egypt vs Cameroon 2017 African Nations Cup final report

Posted: 5 February 2017 Time: 20:16

Cameroon struck with one minute remaining on the clock to defy all odds as they came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 and lift the 2017 African Nations Cup trophy.

The Pharaohs started strongly and probably should have taken the lead with a little over a minute gone as Abdallah El Said was played through on goal with just Joseph Ondoa to beat, although the forward made it easy for the goalkeeper, who got down well to make the save.

Midway through the first-half and the Egyptians got their goal, a quick passing move ending with Mohamed Elneny picking up the ball in the area before selling the defenders and goalkeeper with his eyes by shaping to cross, only to instead squeeze the ball home at the near post.

Cameroon struggled to put together any real threat going forward, with Christian Bassogog twice blazing wildly over the crossbar before half-time to highlight a lack of experience from the Indomitable Lions.

The second-half proved a different affair for Cameroon, who struck the equaliser just before the hour mark, captain Benjamin Moukandjo digging out an early delivery into the area, where substitute Nicolas Nkoulou rose highest to send his header past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Moukandjo then had a great chance to put Cameroon in front after a low delivery came out to him unmarked in the area, but the ball just took a bobble at the vital moment to eventually see the skipper balloon his shot way over.

Hugo Broos’ men weren’t to be denied, though, and struck the decisive goal with just one minute of regulation time remaining, Vincent Aboubakar producing some sublime skill to control with his chest before scooping the ball over his marker and volleying down into the ground to leave Essam El Hadary rooted to the spot.
