Sibusiso Vilakazi warns Mamelodi Sundowns against complacency in Nedbank Cup opener

Posted: 4 February 2017 Time: 14:39

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Sibusiso Vilakazi expects a good test against Mariveni United in Nedbank Cup opening round, and warns against complacency.

The reigning African Champions will host the Limpopo-based SAB League outfit, with every intention to avoid embarrasment, in their Last 32 clash next month.

'Sbu' admits it will be an intriguing match, and is also well aware that complacency could cost them a shot at a second title so far this season.

“It’s quite an interesting one. But It’s a cup game, and in a cup game you have one shot to either win or you are out," Vilakazi was quoted as saying by his club's site.

"But we will gather as much information as possible about them. We want to win.”

The 27-year-old Soweto-born attacker also played down Downs' 24-0 drubbing of lower league outfit Powerlines FC in the 2012 edition of this tournament, but reiterates their level of seriousness to advance to the next round.

“Look, that was then. The game keeps changing. It’s going to be a good test for us and also for them. We are motivated. We take it as a cup final.”

Mariveni boss Tsakani Hlungwani, meanwhile, believes facing The Brazilians will provide great exposure for his boys regardless of the result.

"We are excited about the draw and playing Sundowns who are African Champions is any player’s dream," Hlungwani said.

"We should give it a big shout and we won’t be like lamb to the slaughter.

"However, our prime aim we need to derive from this encounter is exposure and experience; it will be priceless and useful going forward."
