Keagan Dolly is set to complete his move to Ligue 1 side Montpellier and join the likes of Benni McCarthy on the list of biggest PSL to Europe transfers.
He will be the latest player to swap the Premier Soccer League for an European league after the French club triggered the R25-million buy-out clause in his contract.
But where does that place him on the all-time list of transfers from South Africa to Europe? KickOff.com runs the numbers on the top five past deals, taking into account the value when they were made and what the transfer fee would be today adjusted to the current exchange rate.
Transfer: Seven Stars to Ajax Amsterdam, Netherlands (1997)
Transfer fee then: R22.12-million
Transfer fee now: R54.24-million
McCarthy’s final transfer fee to be paid by Ajax Amsterdam to Seven Stars would only be determined some 18 months after he left Cape Town. That’s because Stars took a portion of the more than $8-million Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo paid Ajax for him in 1999. That took his total transfer fee from Stars to $4-million, a hefty sum of money then and now.
Transfer: Ajax Cape Town to Ajax Amsterdam, Netherlands (2011)
Transfer fee then: R23.98-million
Transfer fee now: R36.08-million
Serero is the most recent player to swap Cape Town for Amsterdam and after his magnificent 2010/11 season under Foppe de Haan at the Urban Warriors, made the move to the Netherlands. After initial struggles, he settled in well and became a key figure in the side and even scored a UEFA Champions League goal against Barcelona. But he has now fallen out of favour and was not even given a jersey number for the 2016/17 season.
Transfer: SuperSport United to Tottenham Hotspur (2011)
Transfer fee then: R16.8-million
Transfer fee now: R25.05-million
Khumalo signed for Tottenham Hotspur after a fine showing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup but never kicked a ball in anger for the North London club as he was continuously loaned out to the lower leagues. He returned to South Africa after the expiry of his four-year contract, initially rejoining SuperSport United before moving to Bidvest Wits in January 2016.
Transfer: Kaizer Chiefs to Hoffenheim, Germany (2011)
Transfer fee then: R14.08-million
Transfer fee now: R21.38-million
Musona was a prized asset of Chiefs and the scourge of many a PSL defence when he was snapped up by German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in 2011. His first season in Europe did not go according to plan as he battled to adjust, while his second on loan at Augsburg was not much better. After returning to Chiefs on loan for the 2013/14 campaign, he is now finding more success in Europe at Belgian club KV Oostende.
Transfer: Thanda Royal Zulu to FC Twente, Netherlands (2009)
Transfer fee then: R11.11-million
Transfer fee now: R14.5-million
Parker initially left Thanda Royal Zulu in 2009 for Red Star Belgrade but when the Serbian side could not come up with the money for the transfer fee, he returned to KwaZulu-Natal. That opened the door for a big move to Dutch club FC Twente, who paid 1-million euros. The Bafana Bafana striker never quite cut it in the Netherlands and after a loan spell in Greece returned to Kaizer Chiefs in 2011.
