Ghana started their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-0 win over Uganda at Stade de Port-Gentil in Gabon on Tuesday night.
West Ham forward Andre Ayew converted a penalty in the 32nd minute for the 2015 finalists after ex-Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan was pulled back by Isaac Isinde in the area.
Avram Grant's side also threatened through two Gyan headers, while Ayew and Man of the Match Christian Atsu tested Mamelodi Sundowns' Denis Onyango in the Ugandan goal.
The Cranes had their best opportunity when Faruku Miya hit the outside of a post but could find no way back against the west African giants, who are bidding for an elusive fifth title following their 1982 triumph.
Uganda, who were captained by Baroka striker Geofrey Massa, made their return to the event after last featuring in 1978, when they lost to the Black Stars in the final.
South African referee Daniel Bennett officiated the later Group D clash between Mali and Egypt which ended in a goalless draw at the same venue.
