Maritzburg United have cancelled Abia Nale's contract at his request.
Nale said he made the decision to leave the club before coach Roger de Sa was appointed earlier this week.
The 'Soul Provider' made five starts and three substitute outings in the league this season under ex-coach Ernst Middendorp and caretaker boss Fadlu Davids.
"The decision to request the club to release me from my contract was taken during the December break. I had enough time to think about it," Nale explained.
"It is sad that I won’t be able to work with such a quality coach as Roger, I would have loved to walk the journey with him, but I took the decision even before he was unveiled."
Maritzburg spokesman Brian Zuma said the topflight outfit wanted the 30-year-old to stay but wished him well for the future.
"We definitely still wanted him to stay, but he had already made the decision and was adamant that it was in his best interest to leave. We are happy with the way the matter was handled and we wish Abia all the best for the future."
The former Kaizer Chiefs winger, who is now a free agent, joined the Team of Choice in November 2015 following his departure from Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Nale also had spells at Golden Arrows and Ajax Cape Town.
