Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia says want-away defender Philani Zulu is confused as he’s been tapped up by many agents, which has complicated matters regarding his future at the club.
The 24-year-old is refusing the offer by his club to extend his current contract, having played just three league matches so far this campaign, the last of which came against Kaizer Chiefs on September 24.
Zulu, who is reportedly being monitored by a host of clubs including Bidvest Wits, Platinum Stars, Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, sees his current contract with the club ending in June and is legally entitled to sign a pre-contract with club of his choice.
Although legally represented by Prosport International, Kadodia has revealed that many agents are trying to sway his player, who he feels is confused which has thus hampered his progress this season.
"We’re standing nowhere,” Kadodia tells KickOff.com. ‘’Philani needs to sort his life out and we would like to see him playing football again and we will support him whatever he wants to do. But the thing is that, at the end of the day, there’s a lot of people who have been confusing his mind and from the club point, we did everything and the best that we could.’’
Kadodia, who denied that Zulu was earning R8000 a month, says the club have shown their interest in keeping Zulu – who was named club’s Most Valuable Player last season after featuring in all league matches – by upping his salary.
“We have supported him very well on his contract - he had a very low contract, but we evaluated the contract very high,’’ added Kadodia.
"Notwithstanding all that, but that is not an issue at the moment. The issue at the moment is that the boy has been tapped by people, by agents, and they want him out for free basically and that is the whole story. But we will do everything in our power to support him.’’
