Mamelodi Sundowns' Denis Onyango and Baroka's Geofrey Massa in Uganda's Africa Cup of Nations squad

Mamelodi Sundowns' decorated goalkeeper Denis Onyango and Baroka FC striker Geofrey Massa are in Uganda's 23-man squad for the African Nations Cup finals.

Onyango was a shoo-in, as evidenced by him winning CAF's best African player based in Africa award on Thursday night.

The 31-year-old, who helped Downs win the Champions League in October, was named Uganda’s Footballer of the Year, and he is among 18 foreign-based players from an eclectic mix of countries, including Iceland, Lebanon, Vietnam and the USA.

Uganda last played at the Nations Cup in 1978 when they finished runners-up. They make their return in Group D and start in Port Gentil on January 17 against Ghana.  


Goalkeepers: Salim Jamal Magoola (Al-Merreikh), Robert Odongkara (St George), Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns).

Defenders: Timothy Awany (Kampala Capital City Authority), Shafiq Batambuze (Tusker FC), Denis Iguma (Al Ahed), Isaac Isinde (St George), Murushid Juuko (Simba), Joseph Ochaya (Kampala Capital City Authority), Nicholas Wadada (Vipers SC), Godfrey Walusimbi (Gor Mahia), Hassan Wasswa (Al Nijmeh).

Midfielders: Khalid Aucho (Baroka FC), Kenya), Mike Azira (Colorado Rapids), Geoffrey Kizito (Than Quang Ninh), William Luwagga Kizito (Rio Ave), Tony Mawejje (Throttur Reykjavik), Moses Oloya (Ha Noi).

Forwards: Geofrey Massa (Baroka FC), Farouk Miya (Standard Liege), Yunus Sentamu (Ilves Tampere), Mohammed Shaban (Onduparaka), Geoffrey Sserunkuma (Kampala Capital City Authority).
