Zimbabwe name a host of PSL stars in AFCON squad

Posted: 5 January 2017 Time: 18:28

Zimbabwe have announced their final squad of 23 for the AFCON finals and as expected a dozen players currently playing for or previously with South African clubs have been included.

Headlining the PSL contingent is Khama Billiat who has been named in an attack that has plenty options in Kudakwashe Mahachi, Cuthbert Malajila, Evans Rusike, Knowledge Musona, Nyasha Mushekwi, Matthew Rusike and Tendai Ndoro.

It is an attack made entirely of players who are either playing or have previously played in the PSL.

Although the squad is balanced, the goalkeeping department is short on experience after the goalkeepers based in South Africa – George Chigova and Tapuwa Kapini – were snubbed by the coach Calisto Pasuwa in preference of local based keepers.

Zimbabwe has another 27 players based in South Africa who could have been included in the squad but were omitted.

The Warriors are in Group B with Algeria, Tunisia and Senegal but must first fly out to Cameroon for a friendly match before they get going in Gabon next week Sunday.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Tatenda Mukuruva (Dynamos, Zimbabwe), Donovan Bernard (How Mine, Zimbabwe), Takabva Mawaya (Hwange, Zimbabwe)

Defenders: Teenage Hadebe, Lawrence Mhlanga (both Chicken Inn, Zimbabwe), Onismor Bhasera (SuperSport United), Oscar Machapa (AS Vita Club, Congo DR), Hardlife Zvirekwi (Caps United, Zimbabwe), Bruce Kangwa (AZAM FC, Tanzania), Elisha Muroiwa (Dynamos, Zimbabwe), Costa Nhamoinesu (Sparta Prague, Czech Republic)

Midfielders: Danny Phiri, Kudakwashe Mahachi (both Golden Arrows), Willard Katsande (Kaizer Chiefs), Khama Billiat (Mamelodi Sundowns), Tinotenda Kadewere (Djugardens IF, Sweden), Marvelous Nakamba (Vitesse Arnhem, Holland)

Strikers: Tendai Ndoro (Orlando Pirates), Evans Rusike (Maritzburg United), Matthew Rusike (SC Sfaxien, Tunisia), Cuthbert Malajila (BidVest Wits), Knowledge Musona (KV Oostende, Belgium), Nyasha Mushekwi (Dalian Yifang, China)
