Kaizer Chiefs’ Ramahlwe Mphahlele laments timing of break

Posted: 2 January 2017 Time: 20:01

Kaizer Chiefs full-back Ramahlwe Mphahlele feels the festive season break came at the wrong time for his side, who looked to be getting back on track towards the end of 2016.

A nine-game winless streak was finally ended with back-to-back victories in the last two games of the year, as the Glamour Boys lifted themselves to fourth place on the Absa Premiership standings, just a point behind table-topping SuperSport United.

Having seemingly put their woes behind them, ‘Rama’ feels the break couldn’t have come at a worse time for Amakhosi.

“I think the break came at the wrong time, as we were getting our flow back, slowly, and now we had to cut it,” he told reporters. “But at the same time, it gave us time to go home and rest and come back now, build up the team, fix the mistakes where we need to, and come back stronger.”

Mphahlele felt the new-look Chiefs just needed time to get the wheels turning as they look to become title contenders once more in the second half of the campaign.

“It’s not easy making a team,” he said. “Look at the guys who just came into the team – there’s different guys, guys from Zimbabwe, I just came into the team, Sbu [Khumalo] just came in … it takes time, it takes time.”

Chiefs return to action on 7 February with a home league fixture against Free State Stars.
