Sundowns have raised their global profile with their CAF Champions League triumph and participation at the FIFA Club World Cup, while they also won the league and Telkom Knockout last season.

A number of their personnel have been nominated for individual accolades, with Onyango and Zimbabwean playmaker Khama Billiat notably short-listed for the African Player of the Year Based in Africa award.

Onyango was also recently rated amongst the best keepers of 2016 by International Federation of Football History & Statistics.

And the 31-year-old is naturally pleased with the recognition.

"It’s not a coincidence that all this recognition is coming our way because we have been doing quite well," Onyango told his club's website.

"The club, coach and some players have been nominated for top awards and already won some.

"It all points to one thing, the club is in a good space. Thank you the club president Mr Patrice Motsepe for his vision. He has been by our side all the way and gave us a platform to change our lives for the better. This has also rubbed off to our national teams, look at Uganda and Zimbabwe; Liberia also had a good run.

"Personally, since I got to Sundowns I have become a better goalkeeper and a better person.

"The dedication of our technical team and backroom staff has not gone unnoticed.

"I am proud to be part of this current generation of Sundowns players. I also hope we inspire an even better generation of players."
