Bidvest Wits reclaimed the summit with a 1-1 draw against ten-man Maritzburg United in their final game of the year on Tuesday night.
After a goalless first half which saw the dismissal of Kurt Lentjies, Cuthbert Malajila's opener for the Students was cancelled out by Mohau Mokate at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Denis Weidlich had an early chance for the hosts but he failed to hit the target from close range 15 minutes in.
Wits forward Hellings Mhango also had a great opportunity just before the interval, as he fluffed his attempt after being teed up by teen sensation Phakamani Mahlambi.
Soon after Maritzburg had playmaker Lentjies sent off for a nasty challenge on Phumlani Ntshangase.
The Clever Boys stole ahead in the 70th minute, as Malajila converted a pass from Mahlambi against his ex-employers.
However, Mokate equalised four minutes later for the Team of Choice, pouncing on the second ball from a corner.
The result allowed Wits to inch ahead of Cape Town City on goal difference with 25 points from 14 games, while Maritzburg moved in front of Orlando Pirates into seventh spot on the table with 19 points.
City, who won the Telkom Knockout earlier this month, can end 2016 in top spot in the league if they impress against Free State Stars at Goble Park on Wednesday night.
