Phumelele Bhengu backs Royal Eagles marksman Sedwyn George to claim Golden Boot

Posted: 12 December 2016 Time: 12:27

Royal Eagles striker Phumelele Bhengu has tipped his teammate Sedywn George to scoop the National First Division Golden Boot award after the lanky hitman moved clear at the top of the scoring charts.

George netted Eagles' match-winning goal against Jomo Cosmos at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday to take his personal tally to 13 for the season.

Meanwhile, Thanda Royal Zulu striker Mhlengi Cele was not able to add to the 12 goals he has when he failed to net in his side's win over Cape Town All Stars.

Bhengu is now tipping George to maintain his scoring streak until the end of the season and claim the Golden Boot award - an achievement that often sees the recipient garner a big move upon doing so.

Bhengu himself is all too familiar with that pattern having received the accolade at the end of the 2014/15 season when he plundered 22 goals whilst with Thanda Royal Zulu and subsequently earned a move to top flight outfit SuperSport United which sadly did not yield many positives.

"You can tell George is doing well and we have to encourage him and pass and give him the ball to keep on scoring because you can see the luck is with him,’’ Bhengu tells

The former Moroka Swallows striker also sees no reason George cannot pass the mark he himself set two seasons ago.

"Why not scoring those 22 goals? Even myself I have one goal but I still see myself getting more than 22 goals that I scored. If I can do it someone else can do it.

"At the moment George is doing well and he’s my teammates, I train with him from Monday to Saturday I know what he’s capable of and he’s capable of getting the prize.

"I’m not putting pressure on him, but it is up to us as teammates to help him, encourage him, give him the ball to score and fight. You saw for yourself he got the ball and scored and we won."
