Ajax Amsterdam could be gearing up for the sale of Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero in January after handing him his first minutes of the season for the club’s reserve side on Friday.
Serero was deemed surplus to requirements by the club at the start of this campaign having turned down a number of opportunities to move elsewhere, and was not even given a jersey number for this campaign.
His contract is set to expire in June and Ajax now look likely to recoup some sort of transfer fee in January, rather than let him go for nothing at the end of the season.
And so he played the full game for Jong Ajax in their 3-1 victory over Cambuur on Friday, his first minutes for the club in seven months in what is potentially a sign the club are trying to keep him match fit to be more attractive to potential suitors.
It follows his goal-scoring exploits for Bafana Bafana last month as they defeated Senegal 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier.
English Championship side Reading have already made an approach for his services with their manager Jaap Stam a fan of the 26-year-old.
“I have indeed spoken to his agent [Nana Tutu] and asked about the possibility,” said Reading’s football director Brian Tevreden.
“Jaap Stam thinks Thulani is a really good player but we also have to make sure his signing does not block the path of any of the youngsters at the club who are coming through. That is why he haven’t taken any firm decision yet.”
