Eric Tinkler reserves praise for Thato Mokeke but admits room for improvement

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has lauded the efforts of versatile midfielder Thato Mokeke, but admits the 26-year-old still has room for improvement.

Mokeke earned the man of the match award for his display in the keft-back position as the City Boyz held Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium last night.

The SuperSport United Academy graduate has been deployed in the centre of defence, as a full-back as well as a defensive midfielder in 12 starts since his deadlie day switch from Matsatsantsa ealier this season.

Tinkler took time to congratulate Mokeke for his man of the match award, and praised his tireless efforts to help the team in whichever position necessary.

"Thato, I must congratulate him because, since he's joined me [at the club], I think I've played him everywhere barring striker," joked Tinkler.

"Everytime he's done a fantastic job for me, and there's a lot of room for improvement. I thought, going forward he could have been a lot better."

Regarding his performance as a full-back, Tinkler elaborated on the areas he would like to see Mokeke improve, while also admitting that he wasn't entirely impressed by his side's showing on the night.

"There were times when he needed to be looking to provide a lot more width, overlapping Aubrey Ngoma, but he tended to play the safe option," he added.

"And then obviously the crosses into the box, those are thing he can certainly improve on, but he's a hard worker and techincally a very good player.

"I'm happy for him but overall, like I said, for me the team didn't perform well."

City currently occupy top spot on the league table, with 21 points from 11 games, and next face a wounded Bidvest Wits outift at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday evening.
