SuperSport hammer Chiefs

SuperSport United virtually killed off any hope Kaizer Chiefs had of claiming the Absa Premiership title when they thrashed them 3-0 at the Loftus Stadium on a rainy Saturday night.

The SuperSport goals were scored by Brent Carelse, Elias Pelembe and Morgan Gould.

The Amakhosi certainly started the better of the two sides, controlling ball possession and dictating play, but that only lasted the opening 20 minutes. From there on out it was all SuperSport, who showed the Soweto giants why they are the current Absa Premiership leaders and the 2007/08 defending champions.

On a night drenched with rain, it was always going to prove difficult for the players, but one player in particular, Itumeleng Khune, outdid himself as he failed to show any dominance inside his 18 yard area which in the end cost his team the three points and probably a shot at the league title.

The first of United’s three goals came in the 28th minute from an in-swinging free-kick on the right hand side of midfield. Daine Klate whipped in a teaser of cross that Khune came out of goal to flap at, missing it completely. The ball fell to Brent Carelse at the back post and he made no mistake as he powerfully fired the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.

Chiefs almost equalised immediately after going behind when a poor defensive clearance by Morgan Goudld resulted in the ball falling to Jose Torrealba, who pulled the best out of Denis Onyango in the United goal. Onyango, diving full stretch to his right, denied the Venezuelan striker’s left-footed effort.

The Soweto Glamour boys suffered a further set back in the 33rd minute when another mistake in defence saw them concede their second goal. Klate showed some beautiful skill to skip past Wayne Matle on the left flank before producing an inch perfect cross to find Elias Pelembe unmarked inside the six yard box. The Mozambique international clinched his eighth goal of the season with a clinical header giving the goalie no chance, 2-0.

Chiefs were no match for the Matsatsantsa on the night, with the final nail in the coffin coming eight minutes into the second half when Gould scored his side’s third goal. Again the Amakhosi’s defence was found wanting when another in-swinging free-kick cost them dearly; Khune once again came out of his goal only to be beaten to the ball by Gould who headed the ball into an empty net, 3-0.

It just wasn’t Muhsin Ertugrals night, as his side struggled to create any clear cut opportunities in front of goal and when they did they couldn’t force the ball over the line. The perfect example of this came in the 66th minute when Abia Nale failed to side foot a good cross from the right into an empty net.

Gavin Hunt’s men increased their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership with the empathic 3-0 win over their old rivals. Daine Klate was certainly the star of the match as he proved deadly down the left flank and had a hand in all three of SuperSport’s goals.

The Chiefs fans left their home stadium as if they had attended a funeral and rightly so, as the Amakhosi are now nine points behind League leaders United.
