Cape Town City inched a point clear of Bidvest Wits at the summit with a 3-2 win over Maritzburg United at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday night.
In a see-saw contest, Brian Onyango struck six minutes in from close range for the visitors following a cross from the right by Zimbabwean forward Evans Rusike.
City striker Lehlohonolo Majoro equalised with a tap-in midway through the first stanza to make it 1-1 at the break.
Sibusiso Masina nudged the hosts in front straight after the interval by calmly putting away Given Mashikinya's delivery from the left.
The lead, though, was short-lived as Rusike hit back in the 54th minute with a fine free-kick past goalkeeper Samora Motloung.
Lebogang Manyama, however, responded when he converted a cross from Aubrey Ngoma in the 75th minute.
Eric Tinkler's side held on for their sixth straight win in all competitions despite the late dismissal of defender Robyn Johannes for a second bookable offence.
The new franchise have 20 points from 10 matches - double the tally of mid-table Maritzburg.
