Bafana next face 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers

Posted: 16 November 2016 Time: 15:19

If Bafana Bafana are to replace national team coach Shakes Mashaba, they will need to move quickly with the country’s next crucial assignment just a few months away.

South Africa’s next World Cup qualifier is in August against Cape Verde, but before then they will start their campaign to reach the 2019 African Nations Cup finals to be staged in Cameroon.

Because of the tight international schedule and the need to accommodate the remainder of the World Cup preliminaries, the 2019 qualifiers are scheduled to begin in March next year, just a month after the end of the 2017 tournament.

Assuming the Confederation of African Football (CAF) does not change the format of the qualifiers, it means South Africa will start their campaign then according to a calendar for 2017 that was obtained by KickOff.com.

Another round of qualifiers will also be in June, with the COSAFA Castle Cup likely to be staged directly after those.

It adds some haste to the decision of SAFA over whether to axe Mashaba, who faces a disciplinary process following a public outburst against officials from the organisation after South Africa got their World Cup qualification campaign back on track with a 2-1 win over Senegal in Polokwane on Saturday.
