Bidvest Wits winger Jabulani Shongwe hopes his solid performances during the past weekend’s Gauteng Champions of Champions Cup in Tsakane will help win back his position at the Clever Boys.
Shongwe played in both the Students’ games on Sunday, scoring the first goal before creating another in the second match against Highlands Park who they beat 3-1.
Despite making 16 starts and scoring two league goals last season, Shongwe is yet to be fielded by Gavin Hunt in the Absa Premiership this campaign, but hopes his displays in the friendly tournament will boost his chances of a return to the first team.
"It was a great feeling to play,” he tells Kickoff.com. “I miss being on the pitch and I hope I will get more gametime after these games."
The player says although both he and coach Gavin Hunt did not speak about his performances on the day, he promises to keep on trying harder to impress the coach.
"We didn't speak that much after the game because there was a lot happening,” he says. “I just have to keep working hard. Because to be honest, I want to play - that's all I want to do. I can't be happy sitting on the bench, but in order for me to play I have to work extra hard and listen to the coach."
Log-leaders Wits travel to Platinum Stars in their next encounter on Saturday evening.
