No panic yet for Algeria coach Georges Leekens after Nigeria defeat

Posted: 13 November 2016 Time: 14:27

Algeria coach Georges Leekens insists his side can still qualify for the World Cup in Russia despite a horror start to the final round of qualifiers.

Nigeria routed the Algerians 3-1 in their latest qualifier to leave the powerful north Africans with just a single point from their opening two games, five adrift of group leaders, the Super Eagles.

Only the top team in each pool books a ticket to Russia.

“One thing is for sure, we have not been eliminated,” Leekens told reporters.

“It will be difficult to qualify for the World Cup, but nothing has been decided yet.”

Leekens says his side played better than the result suggests.

“We were slightly better than Nigeria in the second half, but we were not lucky,” he said.
