Bafana Bafana attacker Thulani Serero said the team "had to grind it out" against a quality Senegal outfit in Polokwane on Saturday.
Bafana edged the Teranga Lions 2-1 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier at Peter Mokaba Stadium, building on the 1-1 draw they recorded in Burkina Faso in their Group D opener.
"It was very difficult for us because they have a very good team. We had to grind to get the points. Especially when we play at home, we have to make sure we get all the points," said Serero, who netted soon after Thulani Hlatshwayo slotted a 42nd minute penalty given in error by Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey.
The Ajax Amsterdam man said coach Shakes Mashaba cautioned the team against complaceny after taking a 2-0 lead into the break.
"He made it clear to us in the second half they are going to come out and attack us, and maybe put on an extra striker. So we have to make sure we protect our two goals and go out there and do it in the second half."
