Daniel Akpeyi receives Nigeria call-up to replace Carl Ikeme

Posted: 10 November 2016 Time: 16:52

Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi could be drafted into goal for Nigeria in their key World Cup qualifier against Algeria on Saturday after being called up as cover for the injured Carl Ikeme.

Akpeyi, who went to the Olympic Games with the west Africans as one of their over-age players and came home with a bronze medal, now awaits the decision by new coach Gernot Rohr on who will wear the number one jersey for the match in Oyo on Saturday.

He is up against Ikechukwu Ezenwa for the position.

Born in England to a Nigerian father, Ikeme has been the first choice for the Super Eagles since Vincent Enyeama quit the national team.

Ikeme injured his hip playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers against Blackburn Rovers in the Championship in England at the end of last month.

Nigeria are looking to keep up their 100 percent record in the group after beating Zambia away last month at the start of the group phase of the African World Cup qualifiers.
