Thanda Royal Zulu coach Roger Sikhakhane has heaped praise on leading scorer Mhlengi Cele, who has already struck 12 times for the NFD leaders.
Amabhubesi are still unbeaten after 10 matches of the First Division season, five points clear of closest challengers Stellenbosch FC.
Cele, who has played under Sikhakhane at Thanda and Chippa United in previous seasons, leads the scoring charts with 12 goals, three ahead of Royal Eagles’ Sedwyn George.
“He has been outstanding for us. I brought Mhlengi here from Chippa and I’m happy to see him scoring,” Sikhakhane tells the PSL website.
“But let me also say it’s a team effort, we work as a team to make the goals. Others are scoring too, our full-back and defenders, captain Innocent Maela and Boikanyo Komane for example.”
Sikhakhane took over a struggling side in February for his second spell in charge and has lead them to promotion favourites within the space of just eight months.
“It helps that I have been here for some time, I think they understand me quite well now,” he adds on the secret to this early success.
“I encourage them to play flowing football and I think they enjoy that. I try to instill discipline, to make sure we cut out silly mistakes. I don’t try to change my players too much, I rather try and add to what they have.”
Thanda’s next game is away to eight-placed AmaZulu on Sunday, 20 November.
