Orlando Pirates caretaker coach Augusto Palacios felt it was crucial Brighton Mhlongo kept goal against Highlands Park following the heavy defeat to SuperSport United.
Mhlongo shipped six goals against Matsatsantsa in the league on Tuesday, courting criticism as well as empathy from the likes of ex-Buccaneers net-minder Innocent 'Ayobayo' Mayoyo.
Palacios has explained why he backed Mhlongo for the Telkom Knockout quarter-final against Highlands, which ended 2-1 in Bucs' favour on Saturday.
"I sent a message to Brighton after the SuperSport game and told him that this is part of football. Results go against you at times," Palacios said at the post-match press conference at Orlando Stadium.
"I've known Brighton for over 11 years. It was important that he played today. To drop him would have killed him.
"I reminded him that there are many times where he was the difference in the team, and again he showed his quality today.
"Brighton just needs to correct a few things in his game but otherwise he is a very good keeper, and still improving," added the Peruvian, who took charge of Bucs following Muhsin Ertugral's resignation in midweek.
