African Nations Cup hosts Gabon have fired coach Jorge Costa just 70 days before they open the tournament in January following a series of poor results.
The Gabonese federation removed the Portuguese and replaced him with compatriot Jose Antonio Garrido, who had previously been the technical director of the federation, it was confirmed on Friday.
Gabon, who drew at home with Morocco last month at the start of the group phase of the World Cup qualifiers, have won just twice in seven games this year.
They play Mali on Saturday, November 12, in their second Group C match in their bid to qualify for a place in Russia in 2018, but more pressing is their hosting of the Nations Cup.
They open the tournament against Guinea Bissau in Libreville on Jan. 14.
Costa, 45, had been in charge of Gabon for just over two years. Garrido, 56, has previous coaching experience in the Middle East and was briefly at Benfica during his playing days.
