Mamelodi Sundowns Polokwane City Telkom Knockout last 16 report

Posted: 27 October 2016 Time: 17:15

Mamelodi Sundowns cruised into the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City in a game that only sparked into life in the second period.

Goals from Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane sealed the victory for the defending champions, who never looked under much threat in the game.

City huffed and puffed, but lacked the quality to break down the newly-crowned African champions.

With the team having only been back in the country for 36 hours following their continental success, coach Pitso Mosimane made five changes to his starting line-up.

In came Kennedy Mweene, Wayne Arendse, Thapelo Morena, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Yannick Zakri, but it was the introduction in the second period of Khama Billiat and Themba Zwane that turned the game in the home side’s favour.

It was a lacklustre opening 45 minutes in which Sundowns started the brighter but battled to create the chances to test George Chigova in the City goal.

City came into game the longer the half wore on. Vilakazi was denied early on by an excellent tackle from Sibusiso Mbonani as he raced into the box.

Vilakazi was then booked just before the break for simulation as he went in search of a penalty what was never there.

It was more of the same in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as chances were few and far between.

City looked to be getting on top but it was Sundowns who broke the deadlock on 65 minutes as Themba Zwane, just on as a substitute for Vilakazi, set up Kekana on the edge of the area and he blasted the ball home.

It was 2-0 five minutes later with the simplest of goals. Thapelo Morena got to the byline and Zwane had the simplest of tap-ins to score.
