Classy Chiefs win in Durban

Kaizer Chiefs beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in their Absa Premiership clash at a rain-swept Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Ajax had their best chance of the match in the third minute when Daniel Cardoso skipped at the back, allowing Nathan Paulse to run through on goal, but Itumeleng Khune came out quickly as Paulse put the ball wide.

After that early let-off it was all Amakhosi as the likes of George Maluleka, George Lebese and Hendrick Ekstein passed the ball around confidently in the wet conditions.

Chiefs' best chance came in the 39th minute when left-back Sibusiso Khumalo ghosted into the box at the far post to meet William Twala's cross from the right, but he could not direct his header on target.

It was an open, attacking game played with high intensity but neither side could create any further chances before the break.

However, Chiefs took the lead after barely two minutes played at the start of the second half as Lorenzo Gordinho popped up at the far post to head in George Maluleka's inch-perfect cross from the right following a short corner.

Steve Komphela's side were now dominant but failed to add to the scoreline to put the game to bed despite several more opportunities.

In the 59th minute the Glamour Boys orchestrated the most incredible miss when substitute Lewis Macha, right on the line, got in the way of William Twala's goalbound shot after a brilliant Maluleka cross from the right flank.

A few minutes later another substitute, Siphiwe Tshabalala, struck the woodwork with a deflected shot before the onrushing Macha missed on the rebound, with the ball falling just out of his reach.

Lebese finished the game off on the counter-attack in the 94th minute, rounding Brandon Petersen and slotting home after running onto Tshabalala's through-ball.

The game ended on a rather sour note as the outsanding Maluleka rather harshly received his second caution and was dismissed, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, for a late trip on Tashreeq Morris.
