Posted: 8 October 2016 Time: 18:47

16-year-old midfielder Kabelo Qabalatsane has tragically passed on after collapsing during the Under 17 Engen Champ of Champs tournament.

The incident occured during Roo Stars FC's opening clash against Old Mutual Academy in Pretoria on Friday morning and sadly died a few hours later.

This was despite the teenager receiving medical attention from the match doctor on site before immediately being admitted to the Steve Biko Memorial Hospital.

As a mark of respect to the family and the soccer fraternity, the tournament organisers have called off the junior tournament that took place at the Tuks sports grounds, following consultation with all the teams taking part.

The host club SuperSport United's CEO Stan Matthews expressed his condolences to the family and the entire Roo Stars FC team following the tragic event.

“No words can fully express our grief and shock at this tragedy," said Matthews. "Unfortunately, we cannot make any further comment until we have received the official medical report as to what caused this tragedy.

"At this sad time our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his teammates and everyone at Roo Stars, and all those present when the incident occurred."

The tournament final was set to take place at the Tuks Sports Grounds on Sunday, October 9, with a live broadcast on SuperSport TV scheduled for 15h00.
