Bidvest Wits midfielder Xola Mlambo disagrees with Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane's view that their showboating was disrespectful towards the end of the MTN8 final on Saturday.
With Wits 3-0 up with a few minutes to go, Mlambo together with substitute Sifiso Myeni and Daine Klate started entertaining the crowd with tricky touches at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
While Mosimane did not take kindly to the skills on show, Mlambo insists it forms a part of the game.
“We had to give the supporters a little bit of something, not saying as a team we are only playing long balls or whatsoever. We had to acknowledge the potential that the individual has here,” Mlambo says.
“We saw the game is already dead and at least just two minutes. But I know I'm going to get a beating for that, I will take it as a man.
“But I wouldn’t say it is disrespect, it's a game of football. If they are doing it to other teams it's how they play and if it happens that it's us doing it to them, it was part of the game. They have to accept it, learn from it and move forward.
“We also would have taken it if they were doing it to us because most of the time we were chasing the ball and always marking. So we had to express ourselves a little bit and ease the pressure that we had from them.”
Mlambo was naturally pleased to claim his first trophy early into his PSL career.
“It's a great honour. I am very excited, but I have to keep calm and stay focused. It's not the end of the world, it is a start of greater things. I didn't have so much expectations but once I was in the final I had to put my hopes high and expect everything,” adds the former Chippa United man.
