Daine Klate gives all praise to Gavin Hunt after MTN8 final win

Posted: 1 October 2016 Time: 19:14

Bidvest Wits match-winner Daine Klate turned all the praise onto Gavin Hunt while accepting his man of the match award.

The 31-year-old, already the most successful individual player ever in the PSL, netted two goals and an assist as Wits thumped Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 at Mbombela Stadium in the MTN8 final on Saturday.

Klate’s first goal was a first-time shot with his weaker right foot. He then showed great bravery to go in for a header against Denis Onyango as he won the ball for Eleazer Rodgers to slide in the second. And Klate’s second strike was a great finish on the slide to turn home Rodgers’ pass to seal the result.

But the former SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates midfielder was humble as ever in his post-match interview on SuperSport.

“If anyone deserves man of the match it’s our coach, he’s been unbelievable since he came to Wits. You know what, our coach is the man of the match, he deserves it more than anyone else today,” said Klate.

“We came out here and played with no fear today, in the change room we said boys you know what, these are the occasions we worked for in pre-season, this is the occasion that we’ve been waiting for and we’re just going to go out there and give it our all.

“So we went out there with absolutely no fear today and we enjoyed the game, and what a team performance.

Klate took time to reiterate the importance of Gavin Hunt in this win.

“The coach is always spot on, when we give it our all, when we do what he says we must do, we do exceptionally well. I’m just very happy for the brand Bidvest Wits today,” he added.

Klate also played down his personal achievement and said he would think about that when he’s finished playing.

“The most important thing for me is the badge in the front, you know, one day when I retire I can reflect on all the success that I’ve had in cups wins and league titles but for now I still want to go strong and I’m very happy that I contributed to the success of the team today,” he concluded.
