Polokwane City came close in stoppage time to snatching all three points away against Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday after coming back from an early goal and drawing 1-1 at the Cape Town Stadium.
Some stout defending from a 10-man Ajax at the end saved a point but both sides are yet to register their first success of the new campaign.
Ajax had taken an early lead but Polokwane equalised from the penalty spot in the 60th minute. Roscoe Pietersen was sent off for giving away the spot kick leaving Ajax down to 10 for the last half hour and losing them the initiative in the game.
But by then they should have been at two or three ahead after Polokwane’s goalkeeper George Chigova made some eye-catching stops.
Nathan Paulse back heeled a clever goal in the opening four minutes after a darting run from Bantu Mzwakali and should have had a second just a minute later had it not been for Chigova’s big frame.
There was another fine stop from the Zimbabwe international to deny Musa Lebusa before the break although Brandon Petersen at the other end was also called in to the game and made a brilliant one-handed stop to deny Puleng Tlolane.
Ajax then threw it away on the hour when Pietersen brought down Tloleng and Thobani Mncwango equalised from the spot.
Suddenly the home side were forced onto the back foot although Polokwane took their time about using the numerical advantage.
It was only near the end that Sipho Jembula, Tholane and Jabu Maluleke had chances that Ajax did well to block to preserve the point.
