Orlando Pirates coach Muhsin Ertugral has explained his decision to start goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo ahead of Felipe Ovono against Ajax Cape Town last night.

Ovono played in Bucs' first two games of the season against Golden Arrows (3-1 win) and Bidvest Wits (2-1 loss) in the league and MTN8.

However, the Equatorial Guinea international made blunders in both games, prompting Ertugral to field Mhlongo in the 2-1 victory over Ajax at Cape Town Stadium.

"These things happen in the game," Ertugral says of Ovono's mistakes.

"Obviously when you concede a goal it is a chain of mistakes, it is not only one... at the end is the goalkeeper. Obviously it was easy situations, he knows that himself, we don't need to go into that.

"He was down a bit. He let the team down, that's what he felt. I had a slight chat with him. It was difficult to continue with him in this game.

"Really the great sign is the team really helped him this week in the training sesssions, they spoke to him. It seemed to be when he came back from the national team he was a bit more confident, because he didn't concede with the national team. He was a little bit more fine, but I could still see he was a bit down.

"What I loved about last two weeks, Brighton, how professional he was. Because he was the standing goalkeeper until I took him off. Obviously we explained why and for what reasons and he took that so professionally. I take my hat off to him. Because of this professionalism and how he conducted himself, for my side, this is why he got the respect and why he was in goal."
