Marc Van Heerden backs Chippa United to win MTN8

Posted: 9 September 2016 Time: 17:49

Newly signed Chippa United defender Marc Van Heerden believes the team are capable of going all the way to lifting the MTN8 trophy.

The Chilli Boys will welcome Mamelodi Sundowns to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium for their MTN8 semi-final first leg on Sunday afternoon.

Though the former AmaZulu fullback has admitted respect for the reigning Absa Premiershing champions, he beleives there is no reason why the Port Elizabeth-based side cannot finish top in the competition.

“If you believe in it, then why not,” Van Heerden told the PE Herald.

“I can’t see why we cannot win the competition. We can make a statement by getting a win [against Sundowns] in the first leg."

The Bafana Bafana defender also feels winning the club's first trophy will ignite a huge sense of belief which could help the team to challenge for more silverware this season and in future.

“If we can win this competition, then there’s an opportunity to grow the belief within the team," he added.

“This is a platform to show what we are capable of doing and this will help with confidence going forward.”

Last season Dan Malesela guided Chippa to their first top eight finish in the Absa Premiership as they finished in sixth place, making this their maiden entrance into the MTN8 competition.
