Chippa United’s right-back Diamond Thopola and Orlando Pirates forward Thabiso Kutumela have been called up to Shakes Mashaba’s national team squad.
Ajax Cape Town duo Prince Nxumalo and Rivaldo Coetzee could not honour their call-ups owing to a hamstring injury and chicken pox respectively, with the Bafana Bafana technical team earlier on Monday stating they were “working on” getting replacements.
Yet the Chilli Boys jumped the gun, announcing Thopola’s call-up on their website.
“Congrats to right-back Diamond Thopola for the Bafana Bafana call up for their Afcon qualifier and the Nelson Mandela Challenge,” read a statement released by the club.
“The Chippa United right back has been called up as one of the replacements following the withdrawal of Ajax duo, Rivaldo Coetzee and Prince Nxumalo.”
Thopola, who received his maiden call-up in Mashaba’s previous squad that faced Gambia, played 90 minutes in both his side’s League and Cup fixtures so far this season.
A statement later released by Bafana Bafana on their Twitter account confirmed Thopola's inclusion, while revealing Kutumela as Nxumalo's repalcement.
"Thabiso Kutumela of Orlando Pirates has just joined the Bafana Bafana camp in Nelspruit as a replacement for Prince Nxumalo (hamstring)," the statement read.
Last season's topscorer for Baroka has made two substitute appearances for the Bucs so far this campaign.
