New Maritzburg United defender Denis Weidlich has called on the team to improve in order avoid the relegation fight this season.
Weidlich, who is of Ghanaian decent but grew up in Germany, was persuaded to move to South Africa and join the Team of Choice by his compatriot Ernst Middendorp.
The 30-year-old centre-back was one of the 30 PSL debutants in midweek, and played a key role alongside defensive partner Bevan Fransman in helping United to a 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic.
"Last season was part of football. It was last season and this is a new season so it is up to us to change the way the team performs," Weildich tells KickOff.com.
"Each player here doesn't want to repeat what happened last season. Everyone has their own goals and desire to play to the best of their ability.
I think everyone came here to reach that level, so we are trying everything in our efforts to play better than last season."
The 30-year-old spent 10 years playing in the German lower divisions and joined Maritzburg in July, upon the recomendation of his former coach at third division side Holstein Kiel, who is a good friend of Middendorp.
