New Bidvest Wits signing Gabadinho Mhango has explained his decision to join The Clever Boys and expressed his delight at his debut performance on Tuesday evening.

Mhango signed for Wits on a pre-contract in January, before being released by Bloemfontein Celtic and subsequently going to join Golden Arrows on a short-term basis.

The Malawian describes the move as a “big” one for his career, and targets some silverware under Gavin Hunt and alongside the quality of players at the Milpark-based club.

“This was a big move for me. I needed to change teams and go where I’m likely to get a trophy, so I saw this team [Wits] has the potential to get a trophy, which we can do anytime from now,” Mhango told reporters after the match.

The 23-year-old put out a man of the match performance as he helped his side to a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in their Absa Premiership opener, and credits the team effort while playing down his personal hopes to get on the scoresheet.

“First of all I want to thank God and my teammates, and thanks to everyone from Bidvest Wits,” he added. “I performed well and I need to continue that in the next game.

“I’m not disappointed [that I did not score], as long as the team gets three points I’m grateful. Yes, I need to score because that’s my job. If I don’t score then I feel like I didn’t play the game.

“But, for me, It’s a part of the game. I can’t say I’ll score in every game but I’ll make sure in the next game.”
