Tsepo Masilela: Kaizer Chiefs chasing strong start against Bidvest Wits

Posted: 23 August 2016 Time: 11:27

Kaizer Chiefs left-back Tsepo Masilela says the team is determined to start the season strong against title rivals Bidvest Wits tonight.

Kick-off is at 19h30 at Bidvest Stadium.

Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala faces a late fitness test for the Absa Premiership opener, while centre-back Erick Mathoho and new signing Keagan Buchanan have been ruled out with injury.

“We don’t want to play catch up,” Masilela told the club's website. “We want to be in the thick of things from the start. We have learnt our lessons and this time we are geared to have a good run from the start.”

The former Bafana Bafana star, however, has ample respect for the Students, who finished runners-up to champions Mamelodi Sundowns last term under coach Gavin Hunt.

“Wits finished second and their coach, Gavin Hunt, has won many trophies before,” Masilela said of the three-time PSL champion.

“They have quality players. We are aware this is the opener and everyone wants to start on a high. The positive is that we are ready. Everyone goes in the opener with the aim to start strong. We want to have a good run from the word go.”

The 31-year-old added that morale is high in the Amakhosi camp after a good pre-season.

“I feel great, because we had a fantastic pre-season. We played a couple of friendlies. We can’t say we are 100 percent in terms of game sharpness, but we are looking good - the team spirit is at an all-time high.”
