Ajax Cape Town have retained Travis Graham as their captain for the new season, dispelling any exit rumours involving the hard-working midfielder.
The Urban Warriors skipper featured in 23 of his club’s 30 League matches last season, putting in a number of impressive displays which garnered much interest from Gauteng, with former teammate Keagan Dolly encouraging his ex-clubmate to “make the step up”.
Yet Ajax coach Roger de Sa has refuted any claims of an exit for the 23-year-old.
“There’s always speculation around players, but there’s been nothing at all, to be honest,” the coach told reporters. “It’s funny, we get more information from social media than official emails from club to club. Maybe it’s agent talk,” he quipped.
When asked if the academy graduate would retain the armband at Ikamva this season, De Sa replied: “Yes, absolutely. I think when he took the armband, he was a baby … now he’s a man. He’s been great, and good to have. He’ll be a better captain, and I think year by year he improves as well. And there are many others – I think Mosa [Lebusa] did well last year as well, and can easily carry the armband.
“The difference this season is that I have quite a few leaders out there, so we need a lot more than Travis, and that’s great to have.”
Graham is set to skipper his side in their opening Premiership match-up against Baroka on Tuesday evening.
