Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has explained that the club signed goalkeeper Darren Keet to offer tougher competition for Moeneeb Josephs.
Keet joined the Clever Boys on a one-year deal, with an option for another, from Belgian side KV Kortrijk, shortly after also snapping up national under-23 shotstopper Kyle Peters last month.
Hunt has since explained that the reason for the signings, saying the Wits goalkeeping department lacked depth, while Josephs' age needed to be considered for the future too.
"Moeneeb is old – 36. He needs competition," explained Hunt. "We saw what happened last year, where he cost us three points and it could have been vital [towards the league chase].
"We can't have a situation where we put a 19-year-old if something wrong happens to Moeneeb. We need to be better.
"We need to have two good goalkeepers and we need better competition from the goalkeepers."
Hunt added: "If you compare yourself with the league winners [Mamelodi Sundowns], I mean, look at their goalkeeping department. If you lose one, the next one might be even better.
"So, yeah, we've got three good goalkeepers now and that's the best I have had."
