Deolin Mekoa would have preferred to play right wing at the Rio Olympics but feels he performed well in various positions, and insists the national U-23 team gave it their all at the showpiece.
Owen da Gama's side exited the tournament at the first hurdle after drawing with Brazil and Iraq and losing to Denmark.
"I'm a natural winger so they played me left-back and the coach told me that he's going to use me in the left-back position at the start of the tournament," says Mekoa, who represented his club Maritzburg United in the KZN Premier's Cup this past weekend.
"And I told him I can play there but my best position is on the right wing. But having said that, I was one of the utility players and I can play anywhere.
"In the second game I played in the centre of midfield and the last game I played as the left-back. But yeah I did well I think because I can play in any position."
Mekoa adds: "I think we tried our best and I think you watched the games... You saw that we tried our best but we couldn't score.
"We tried to fight to qualify but unfortunately we didn't score and things didn't go our way."
