Platinum Stars captain Vuyo Mere says he is impressed with the youngsters introduced by coach Cavin Johnson as his side finalise preparations ahead of the new season.

Johnson fielded a number of youngsters from the club academy including Nhlakanipho Duma, Kobamelo Kodisang, Gift Links, Katlego Khunou and Charles Baloyi during their Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup friendly defeat to Orlando Pirates at the Moruleng Stadium on Saturday.

Mere feels the future bodes very well for Dikwena, especially after the youngsters gave a decent performance against a big team like Pirates.

“I was impressed with the young ones from academy,” Mere said “They have done well and deserve a pat on the back after a performance like that against Pirates.

“I think we are ready. If you can face Pirates and take them to penalties, you can face anybody. We all know they are giants in Africa.”

Johnson deployed Mere as anchorman during the Maize Cup tournament with the Dikwena captain insisting he was comfortable in his new position, which could become a permanent switch in the coming campaign.’

“I was given a task and it’s not something new to me,” he said. “As long as you give your all when wearing the jersey, everything will go well for you.”

Dikwena host SuperSport United in their first Premiership game of the season on Wednesday, 24 August.
