Sundowns back to second spot

Posted: 15 February 2009 Time: 20:18

Mamelodi Sundowns moved back into second spot in the League standings after a comfortable 2-0 win against Bidvest Wits at Super Stadium.

Downs made their intentions clear right from kick-off and took the lead after just three minutes when Siboniso Gaxa’s cross from the right was headed home by an unmarked Surprise Moriri.

Both sides settled well after the early goal, but neither side forced either keeper into action, failing to hit the target when any opportunities arose.

The second half started in a similar fashion, with most of the action taking place in midfield. Wits went in search of an equaliser and, despite forcing a couple of basic saves for Marlin, they never really threatened Sundowns.

In the 76th minute it was that man again; Surprise Moriri out-jumped the Wits defence and Darren Keet in goal to head home his second and give Sundowns a comfortable 2-0 lead. Kurt Lentjies put in the cross and Moriri did the rest.

Minutes later Wits had a penalty turned down after Lentjies handled in the area.

Sundowns coasted through the final stages and Lentjies almost scored the goal of the game in injury-time when he latched onto a poor clearance from Keet in the Wits goal. Lentjies shot from 40 yards out, but was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post.

Not the greatest game of the season, but Sundowns deservedly completed their fifth win on the trot and move back to second spot in the table.
