Bidvest Wits midfielder Thabang Monare feels his new club are more than capable of going one better and winning the Absa Premiership this season.
Monare joined the Clever Boys in June, returning to top-flight football immediately after previous club Jomo Cosmos was relegated last season.
And the 26-year-old feels his new squad have the experience to better their second-place finish of the 2015/16 campaign.
“These players were capable of becoming runners up, so clearly we have players that are capable of winning the league,” the Wits newcomer tells KickOff.com. “Players like Moeneeb Josephs, Daine Klate … the list is endless. As new players, we are learning a lot from these guys.”
Monare admits the club have lost a good player in Sibusiso Vilakazi who has since joined league champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but feels the Students are still a strong unit who can fight for glory without their former star.
“I didn't spent much time with Vilakazi when he was still around, but he is no doubt a talented player,” Monare says. “So yes, the team have lost a good player.
“But as far as the league is concerned, it's too early to say we are going to win it, but right now we can say we want to win our next match. I honestly think that if we believe and take it that approach, it will take us far.”
Wits open their 2016/17 Absa Premiership account against Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday, 23 August.
